Rear-Delt Fly
Performance education — not medical advice.
Horizontal abduction for rear delts; chest-supported if you swing.
Setup checklist
- Choose a load you can own for the target rep range with 1–3 reps in reserve on most sets.
- Film a working set from the side when learning the pattern.
- Stop if you feel sharp joint pain, dizziness, or chest pain — seek professional care.
Cues
- Brace before the first rep; keep a repeatable start position.
- Control the eccentric; avoid bouncing out of the hardest range.
- Progress load or reps only when form stays honest at your target RPE.
| Common fault | Fix |
|---|---|
| Ego loading | Drop weight until range and control return |
| Cutting range to move more plates | Own a smaller honest range, then expand |
| Skipping warm-ups on heavy days | Use the warm-up ladder |
How to place it in a week
Most healthy intermediates progress with 1–2 hard sessions of this pattern each week, inside a recoverable weekly set budget. Pair it with a complementary pattern (for example a hinge if this is a squat, or a row if this is a press) rather than stacking near-identical variations on the same day.
- Keep most working sets at roughly RPE 6–8; leave room for the last hard set.
- Log load × reps. Small weekly adds beat random PR attempts.
- If sleep or joints are poor, cut a set before cutting technique standards — see rest-day guidance and rest-day tree.
Progression ladder (illustration)
| Week focus | What to change | Stop rule |
|---|---|---|
| Own the range | Same load, cleaner depth/path | Form breaks before target reps |
| Add reps | +1–2 total reps across sets | RPE jumps past plan |
| Add load | Smallest plate jump you can own | Sharp joint pain — stop |
Use warm-up ladder on heavier days and RPE training: what RPE 8 means so “hard” stays honest.
When to substitute
Swap the implement (barbell ↔ dumbbell ↔ machine/cable) when the pattern still matches the goal but the current path irritates a joint or you cannot progress load safely. Substitution is a skill, not a morality contest — see machines vs free weights.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Rear-Delt Fly required?
No exercise is mandatory. Choose patterns you can progress and recover from.
How many sets?
Often 2–4 hard sets inside a session, inside your weekly volume budget.
What if it hurts?
Stop sharp pain. Shorten range, change implement, or seek clinical care — Muslex does not diagnose.
