Warm-up ladders that respect the top set
A warm-up ladder moves from the empty bar (or light start) toward the first working set with rising load and falling reps. The goal is readiness and technical rehearsal — not fatigue. Skip redundant steps when you are already warm from prior movements; add denser steps for heavy squats, benches, or pulls.
Warm-ups should leave plenty of reps in reserve. Grinding warm-up singles to failure is a common way to miss the working sets that actually drive progress. Keep primers crisp and stop well short of failure.
Time-crunched sessions can use a short ladder; heavy strength days often need an extra heavy single or double below the work weight. Accessory lifts usually need fewer ramps than primary barbell patterns.
