You do not need a morality contest between machines and free weights. Choose implements that let you train hard, progress, and recover — then stick with them long enough to learn.

Both can build muscle. Free weights usually require more stability skill; machines often reduce balance demand so the target muscle can take more of the load. A good program uses either or both.

What actually matters

Ask three questions before arguing implements:

  1. Can I overload this pattern for 8–12 weeks with honest logs?
  2. Does the path irritate joints at working loads?
  3. Will I still have access to this tool when I travel or change gyms?

If (1) is yes and (2) is no, keep the tool. Free-weight skill is valuable for transfer; machines/cables are valuable for stable progressive overload and regional finishers. Mixed programmes are normal among strong lifters.
