Full body

Upper / lower
Excellent four-day compromise: room for accessories without a six-day commitment. Many intermediates live here for years. You can rotate emphasis (strength upper, volume lower) without rewriting life.
PPL
Great for six-day blocks with good recovery. On three days it becomes once-weekly per group — workable but often slower for hypertrophy than full body at the same day count. Be honest about missed Fridays.

- Write your real weekly availability.
- Choose the split that keeps major muscles near ~2× weekly when possible.
- Cap session length you will finish.
- Run it for 8–12 weeks while logging load and RPE.

Progression still beats aesthetics

Worked examples by lifestyle
Student with four evenings free: upper/lower is usually the sweet spot — enough frequency, enough accessory room, weekends free for rest or light activity.
Parent with three chaotic weekdays: full body on those days beats a fragile six-day PPL that collapses when a child is sick. Build minimum viable sessions for the worst weeks.
Shift worker with clustered days off: sometimes two full-body days on off days plus one shorter session mid-week works better than textbook PPL. See night shift muscle and the sleep pillar.
Enthusiast who loves gym time and recovers well: six-day PPL can be enjoyable and productive if sleep and joints cooperate. Enjoyment is a legitimate programming variable when results stay on track.
How to evaluate after a block
After eight to twelve weeks, review: Did loads or reps rise on key lifts? Did you miss more than ~20% of sessions? Did joints feel worse? Did sleep hold? If adherence failed, simplify days. If adherence succeeded but numbers stalled, look at Training plateau fixes before blaming the split name.
Also compare session length realism. A “perfect” PPL that requires ninety minutes you do not have will lose to a sixty-minute upper/lower you finish. Time budget belongs in the comparison table as much as frequency does.

Is upper/lower better than PPL?
For four days, usually yes for frequency. For six days, PPL can match frequency with more specialty volume.
Can I mix splits?
You can, but beginners should master one template first to learn cause and effect.
What about bro-splits?
Once-weekly body-part days can work for some advanced lifters; they are not Muslex’s default for busy adults seeking efficient hypertrophy.
How do I switch splits?
Finish a block, deload if needed, then switch on a Monday with overlapping movement patterns so skill does not reset to zero.
