Example: 100 kg for 5 reps → Epley ≈ 116.7 kg, Brzycki ≈ 112.5 kg. The gap is normal. If your program says “80% of 1RM,” decide which estimate you trust and stick with it for the block, or use the more conservative number when unsure.

- Warm up; perform a clean set in the 3–8 rep range when possible (very high reps inflate error).

Using estimates with percentages and RPE
Many programs prescribe loads as percentages of 1RM. If Epley says 120 kg and Brzycki says 115 kg, a conservative lifter might call training max 115–117 kg for the block. Take 80% from that number and confirm the first working set lands near the intended RPE. If the formula says RPE 7 but the bar feels like RPE 9, believe the bar — formulas cannot see your sleep, stress, or technique.
Reps above ~10–12 make predictions noisier; use heavier sets when estimating. Pause bench and deadlift variations may estimate differently than bounced or touch-and-go styles — stay consistent in how you test. Recalculate after body-weight changes or a deload, not after every caffeine-fuelled gym selfie.
For hypertrophy blocks that are RPE-based rather than %-based, you may rarely need a 1RM number at all.
