How Much Weight Should You Add Each Week?

Add the smallest plate that still challenges you when reps hit the top of your range — often 1–2.5 kg (2.5–5 lb) on upper body and a bit more on lower body compounds.

Quick answer

There is no universal weekly jump. A practical rule for healthy intermediates: when you complete all prescribed sets at the top of the rep range with solid form and planned RPE, add a small load next session. Upper-body lifts often progress in ~1–2.5 kg (about 2.5–5 lb) steps; lower-body compounds may tolerate ~2.5–5 kg (5–10 lb) when bars and pins allow. Beginners sometimes jump faster for a while; advanced lifters may add load only every few weeks and progress reps or sets instead.

If you add weight every Monday regardless of performance, form breaks and joints complain. Progressive overload is earned, not scheduled like a calendar appointment.

Step-by-step weekly checklist

  1. Write the target rep range and RPE before the set.
  2. Film or mirror-check one working set periodically for technique drift.
  3. If all sets hit the top cleanly, plan the next small increase.
  4. If only the first set was easy, consider an extra hard set or a small load bump next week — not both reckless changes at once.
  5. Every 4–8 weeks, review the log: stalled lifts need auditing (sleep, body weight, volume), not random exercise roulette. See Training plateau fixes.

When small jumps stop working

Advanced lifts will not rise linearly forever. Switch to double progression (reps then load), wave loading, or longer blocks with planned deloads. Adding 5 kg weekly on bench for months is a beginner story, not a law of physics. Track body weight: sometimes the bar stalls because you are in a long deficit. Education first — not miracle products.

Examples by lift and equipment

Barbell squat with 1.25 kg plates per side can progress in 2.5 kg jumps when earned. Bench press often needs microplates (0.5–1 kg per side) once you leave beginner linear gains. Dumbbell presses that jump 2 kg per hand may require several weeks of extra reps before the next bell feels honest. Cable stacks with large increments benefit from slower tempos or 1½ reps as bridges.

Machines with magnetic pins sometimes offer smaller jumps — use them. If your gym only allows large jumps, your “weekly add” may actually be “add every 2–3 weeks,” with rep progression in between. That still counts as progressive overload. Log RPE: if last week’s top set was RPE 7 and this week the same load is RPE 9 with identical sleep, investigate recovery before forcing another jump.

Beginners may add load more often for a while because neural skill improves quickly. Intermediates should expect slower jumps and more double progression. Advanced lifters may celebrate a 1 kg bench PR across a month. Comparing your weekly jumps to someone else’s highlight reel is a great way to wreck form.

Plate math and ego management

Small jumps beat missed weeks. On barbell lifts, 1–2.5 kg increments are enough for many intermediates once linear beginner gains slow. Dumbbells may force larger jumps — use rep progression and pauses to bridge gaps. If adding load turns a crisp RPE 8 into a grinding RPE 10 with form collapse, you added too much; keep the weight and earn more clean reps first.

Should I add weight every single week?

What if the gym only has 5 kg jumps?

Use extra reps, pauses, slower eccentrics, or microplates if available. Large jumps every session often break form.

Is adding reps as good as adding weight?

Yes within a planned range. Both are progressive overload. Load is not the only lever.

How does RPE change load selection?

If a prescribed RPE 8 set feels like RPE 10, keep or reduce the load. Autoregulate instead of forcing the spreadsheet.

Microloading and double progression
